Architectural and Class 4 shingle roofing for the West Valley

Shingles in Surprise live a hard life — 150 to 190 degrees on a July afternoon. The right shingle, the right color and the right underlayment make the difference between 15 years and 30.

New architectural shingle roof on a two-story stucco home in the West Valley of Phoenix

Tile dominates Surprise, but there are shingle roofs here — on the two-story tracts in Surprise Farms, Rancho Gabriela and Greer Ranch where builders used shingles on steeper upper roofs, on the older Original Town Site homes, on a lot of El Mirage and Youngtown, and on houses whose owners chose shingles for the lower weight and lower cost. The problem is that an asphalt shingle is a petroleum product sitting in direct desert sun. A dark shingle roof hits 150 to 190°F on a summer afternoon, and the oils that keep it flexible bake out. Builder-grade three-tab shingles rated for 25 years are brittle in 12 to 15 here.

So we're particular about shingles in Surprise. We install architectural (laminated) shingles — two bonded layers, 250 to 350 pounds a square, 30-year-to-lifetime warranties — in light, reflective colors that run 20 to 30 degrees cooler than black. Class 4 impact-resistant shingles, which pass UL 2218's 2-inch steel-ball test, are the answer for anyone who remembers the October 2010 hailstorm or the half-dollar hail that hit near Surprise in August 2026, and many Arizona carriers offer a premium discount for them. Underneath, we use high-temperature synthetic underlayment rather than felt, because felt under a hot shingle roof fails the same way it does under tile.

What's included

Architectural (laminated) shingles

Two bonded layers, 250–350 lb per square, 30-year-to-lifetime warranties, hand-sealed for 110–130 mph wind.

Class 4 impact-resistant

UL 2218 Class 4 rated; the certificate goes to you for the insurance discount.

Reflective colors

Light grays, tans and weathered woods that run 20–30°F cooler than black and hold their granules years longer.

High-temp synthetic underlayment

Not felt — a membrane built for the heat under a desert shingle roof.

Ventilation matched

Off-ridge or ridge vents and soffit intake balanced so the attic doesn't hit 150°F and the shingle warranty holds.

Permit & HOA

Like-for-like shingle replacement is permit-exempt; a color change usually needs HOA approval, which we handle.

Questions we get about shingle roofing

Are shingles a mistake in Arizona?

Not if you pick the right ones. A light-colored architectural shingle with proper attic ventilation lasts 20 to 25 years here; a black three-tab over a sealed attic lasts 12. Tile lasts longer and runs cooler, but it costs twice as much and weighs three times as much, so shingles are a legitimate choice — just not a cheap one.

Is a Class 4 shingle worth it in Surprise?

If you're keeping the house, usually. Between the insurance discount many Arizona carriers offer, one avoided hail claim and a longer-lasting roof, the $1,500–$3,000 premium tends to pay for itself. Ask your agent what your carrier offers; we'll send the certificate either way.

Which color is best for the heat?

The lightest your HOA allows. A light gray or tan roof can be 30°F cooler than a dark brown one on a July afternoon, which means cooler attic, lower AC bills and shingles that keep their granules longer.

Can you install shingles over my existing shingles?

The City of Surprise allows up to two layers without a permit, but we don't recommend it: an overlay hides bad decking, traps heat, voids most warranties and doubles the next tear-off. We tear off.

Do you install shingles over tile decking?

Yes — converting a tile roof to shingles is common on budget-driven replacements, and the trusses handle it easily since shingles are lighter. It needs a city permit for the material change and HOA approval almost everywhere.
